An outside whirlpool has long been derided as the ultimate symbol of a glitzy lifestyle, favoured by footballers and other celebrities rather than serious gardeners.
However, the survey of 3,000 consumers undertaken by YouGov on behalf of the retailer B&Q found that tubs were more desired than a green house, vegetable patch or decking.
When asked what they would most like in their garden, 16% said a hot tub, closely followed by 15% who wanted a swimming pool.
A vegetable plot was only favoured by 13%, while a greenhouse received just 11% of the votes.
Consumers have been increasingly willing to spend money on their gardens in recent years, with items such as £1,000 barbecues, expensive decking and water features making appearances.
Experts have pointed out that – despite the revival of grow-your-own – many treat their garden as an outside room rather than a place to cultivate vegetables and flowers.
Tony Welsby, Chairman of the British and Irish Hot Tub Association said: “Over the last few years, there has been a huge increase in the popularity of hot tubs. There are currently over 100,000 in Britain. They are a fantastic focal point for family relaxation and summer garden fun. They can also offer a benefit to arthritis sufferers and assist in sports injury recovery."
According the Swimming Pool and Allied Trade Association, its members will install pools worth £200 million this year.
Steve Guy, at B&Q, said: “Today’s gardeners are more confident than ever before and would like their outdoor spaces to reflect everything about their lifestyle, from relaxing in a hot tub, to entertaining friends and serving up their home-grown produce.”
